Carrie Magness Radna | Red (A Ghazal)

Kissy Coffee Cup with Lipstick Stain

Red (A Ghazal)

A smear of lipstick glazes your favorite coffee cup —  Passion Red.

I’ve not been a coffee drinker, until recently,

when I  started wearing makeup again, after your last yahrzeit — and red.

Passion was one of your favorite colors, but you hated the stain it left on your face.

Things keep changing since you’ve gone. I don’t sleep anymore. I gobble up red

meat, every meal. I wear leather, velvet & lace — chains by the bed.

I speak out. I shout. Your girl has grown up. I remember you with fresh red

roses every Wednesday — Daddy would surprise you, after work.

When will I feel okay again? Will I find the answers to life, traveling? I miss the red

clay of Oklahoma, where you once told me you would never leave. Momma, what a liar you are!

Carrie Magness Radna | The Thin Red Line

Flattening Heart Line

The Thin Red Line

You searched for oceans

while we lived in the desert.

The strawberries, now,

freeze-dried in my mouth.

The southern tip of the sun

glows beet red.

I saw that abnormality,

on a red-eye flight, alone.

Should I leave an apology

after the tone?

Red lipstick stains on coffee cups;

What else did I do wrong?

Did we go too far?

All I have left

are a few good pics,

of us, on my phone —

All I want is to fall

apart in your arms,

but you rode away

in your red Jaguar.

& I never saw

the thin red line,

that breakup line,

until it was too late.

Carrie Magness Radna | Studded Orange

Studded Orange

Why did ya pick dis man?
people used to ask me;
they thought I was still in play,

that his love & kindness
wasn’t enough —

but his skin,
on a good day,
smelled like an orange
studded with cloves

before the muddled wine
& cinnamon Red Hots
were added
to our winter-friendly
romantic recipe.

Carrie Magness Radna | Two Poems

Heart of Gold

I saw you in the light,
gold-glittering skin & hair;
I stood steady in the night,
starstruck & kind with care —

But I’m too scared to speak;
my tongue lies dead in your world,
but in my solitude,
my mouth never stops running.

& my heart starts to dance
when streets turn to gold,
when I see you again & again.

I go into the world,
carrying all my hopes with me,
searching for a heart of gold
to share my life with —

& will you be the one to hold
when the years grow cold?

Will these golden dreams
be minted, or will they
simply blow away
during our first shared words?

Golden

I came like there was no tomorrow last night
My mind was fixed on yellow leaves falling
Outside in the New York streets, fan-like
I didn’t recall the type of trees, but they grew
Into a forest of golden leaves

Then my skin grew golden and the stripes worn raw
Grunting and growling like a newlywed tiger
My mate grinned and said I was letting go of inhibitions
He was the catalyst, not the tiger but the hunger
His sweat mixed with my own

Suddenly all the world was golden tipped
The night was hot and our eyes glowed like candles
He called me his lioness — we both do the work
Loving and living … intertwined love knots
We made with our fingers and our hair

We slept for the thousand years after
The stupid light conversation as the trees disappeared
The golden leaves blew away and my hunger dissipated
Now flesh is milky again and sounds are quiet

And we are happy and warm and tired.

Carrie Magness Radna | Green = Blue + Yellow

Green = Blue + Yellow

If eyes are the windows of the soul,
I saw a little of yours; you dared me to —

In a non-staring contest,
I noticed another universe:

The left eye contained a legend of shimmering electricity.
Its pupil housed a well where elder stars fell,
germinating new ones gathering at the rims
of the cosmic jade sea.

In the right eye,
the constellations wrapped around two planets,
joined at the hips: one blue, another yellow,

and they were constantly humming,
in perfect synchrony, under glass,
blending into a true green.
